Haneen is an untranslatable word that denotes memory. But a type of memory that is stronger than an emotional pull, because it describes a longing for someone or something once upon a time. For many people this Arabic metaphor depicts a concept which is similar to nostalgia, as it signifies a desire to return as well.

Our journal is an independent literary and cinematographic space for your memories. We look for work that captures your untranslatable and unspeakable reflections, observations or emotions. We welcome different types of artistic forms and we always search for the creative in you: a unique and stubborn artist.

Haneen is a home for your writing, photographs, artwork, films. We hope that it is a place where you can come back to either as a contributor or a reader, reliving the essence of memories published on our website.

Our aim is to be inclusive to writers, artists and filmmakers from all over the world. We also support SWANA and Arab artists, POC communities, indigenous and oppressed people, who create independently and look for a platform for their work. We advocate for an intersectional approach, cherishing work that resonates with multiplicity and diversity. Haneen is a community that offers a network for artistic collaboration. We reject any type of discrimination, racism or hate speech.

We accept: poetry, fiction & prose, essay & criticism, travel & reportage, opinion & argument, film & book review, photography, artwork, short films, audio and podcasts. Please refer to our submission section for specific information on word count/running time, portfolio, format, writing, languages and translation. We advise our contributors to read and watch our issues to get a sense of what we tend to publish. We are happy to collaborate through open calls, but generally we prefer to receive your work after calls for submissions.
